Explosion in Monot Strt., Beirut

It seems that this one targeted closing the street as an attraction to Arab tourists (Westerners usually go for the authentic Lebanese environment, Monot is more Western in style), any way it is known that the tourists from the Gulf States who go to Monot, or even the Lebanese who go there are big spenders. This ugly act of terrorism is another one of those targetting the tourist industry in Lebanon. Would it harm tourism if we had more security at these places?

Moustapha's blog post (titled "Bad Comparison") made a good point about the difference between Beirut's explosion and the one is Sharm al-Sheikh.

Attacks at Sharm al-Sheikh

"At least 88 people have been killed in bomb attacks in the Egyptian resort of Sharm al-Sheikh, hospital staff say, 200 more were injured"

It is an act of TERRORISM. It is unjustifiable by any standard.

man shot, NOT connected to attacks

A man shot dead by police in Stockwell, south London, was unconnected to Thursday's attacks, British police say.

A Scotland Yard statement read: "We believe we now know the identity of the man shot at Stockwell Underground station by police on Friday 22nd July 2005, although he is still subject to formal identification.
"We are now satisfied that he was not connected with the incidents of Thursday 21st July 2005.
"For somebody to lose their life in such circumstances is a tragedy and one that the Metropolitan Police Service regrets."

Was it his appearance, they said he looked Asian?!!

Geagea's Parole and Shameful Violence

"Geagea's Parole Triggers Suburban Beirut Violence, 1 Killed, 16 Hospitalized" - Naharnet

Whoever started it, whatever the reasons, it is shameful, and to know that this happened in the same area and street where the 1975 civil war started adds to the worry.
Pres Berri who is also the head of the Amal movement was in full support of freeing Geagea, why then, should there be violence between Amal members and Geagea's Forces?

What is the name of the person killed? Who are the injured? Where did the fire-arms come from?

Is it normal for citizens to get killed whenever there is a celebration?!!

The Prospective Government and Tabboulli

This morning I was counting the political factions in Lebanon who were involved in distributing the seats in the prospective government that is being formed. What was striking is that one of them with the majority in parliament wanted two thirds of the seats, the others wanted a minimum of one third each so they can veto decisions that are not to their likings. The problem is not in this already disgusting form of "slicing" the "shares" in a supposedly democratic country whose people pride themselves in the ability to speak three languages fluently. The problem lies in the fact that there are more than four factions, and multiplying this number by the shares of thirds each wants will result in two or three governments!! The number of ministers in the government as suggested by the appointed prime minister is between 24 and 30, which is already a large number.

This brings us back to our pride and joy: kibbi nayyi and tabboulli, and if tabboulli is causing problems in digestion (gas) then replace it with fattoush.

Lebanon’s Defense Minister hurt in Beirut blast

The worst thing that could happen here in Lebanon is that the Lebanese grow callous as these terrorist acts continue... that we reach a point where these barbaric acts become part of our daily life... where we just hear the news... frown for a second or two ... or even shrug our shoulders... and carry on with our lives as if nothing happened...

God bless the souls of those who died in the blast this morning that targeted minister Elias el Murr, and may God heal all those wounded and hurt.

Cutting Off 55,000 Arabs in Jerusalem

Israel's separation barrier in Jerusalem will cut off 55,000 Palestinian residents from the rest of the city, Israeli officials acknowledged Sunday. Palestinians say they will face daily complications in reaching jobs, schools and hospitals.

Israel captured the eastern part of Jerusalem in the 1967 war and regards the entire city as its capital. The barrier mostly follows the eastern boundaries of the city, as established by Israel after the war.

The new path will cut through two Palestinian neighbourhoods as well as the Qalandiya refugee camp on the eastern outskirts of the city.

The 55,000 Palestinians face daily trips through Israeli checkpoints to enter the main part of their city, while the rest of the West Bank's 2.3 million Palestinians are banned from entering Jerusalem at all times because of Israeli security restrictions.

While the government has taken account of the Supreme Court's rulings, it has ignored the non-binding judgment of the United Nations' International Court of Justice.
The ICJ ruled that parts of the separation barrier which jut into the West Bank are illegal and should be torn down.

More money for "Israel"

Of course, whenever the government of "Israel" decides to invade, it needs American aids and support, and whenever it has to withdraw, it also has to be paid. "The "saw" eats the wood while going up and while going down."

"Israel, which has traditionally been the largest recipient of U.S. assistance, is seeking an additional $2 billion or more to help pay for its planned withdrawal of soldiers and Jewish settlers from the Gaza Strip, Israeli officials said Monday." -International Herald Tribune

Some Numbers

824 million people are starving in the world.

630 million people are homeless in the world.

40 million are infected with HIV in the world.

The world should be united against HUNGER , POVERTY and AIDS as it is united against TERRORISM.

Your can always do something.

It's imperialism, stupid

"In his June 28 speech, President Bush asserted that the invasion of Iraq was undertaken as part of "a global war against terror" that the United States is waging. In reality, as anticipated, the invasion increased the threat of terror, perhaps significantly.

Half-truths, misinformation and hidden agendas have characterised official pronouncements about US war motives in Iraq from the very beginning. The recent revelations about the rush to war in Iraq stand out all the more starkly amid the chaos that ravages the country and threatens the region and indeed the world.

In 2002 the US and United Kingdom proclaimed the right to invade Iraq because it was developing weapons of mass destruction. That was the "single question," as stressed constantly by Bush, Prime Minister Blair and associates. It was also the sole basis on which Bush received congressional authorisation to resort to force.

The answer to the "single question" was given shortly after the invasion, and reluctantly conceded: The WMD didn't exist. Scarcely missing a beat, the government and media doctrinal system concocted new pretexts and justifications for going to war.

"Americans do not like to think of themselves as aggressors, but raw aggression is what took place in Iraq," national security and intelligence analyst John Prados concluded after his careful, extensive review of the documentary record in his 2004 book "Hoodwinked." "
